Bio
Carrot Eaters were formed in 2005 as a recording collaboration between Garrett Johnson (vocals) and Nick Wilson (instruments). Both were college students at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC. Their sometimes delicate, sometimes playful aura harkens back to a fuzzier and prettier era in indie rock.

The project lineup has expanded and shrunken with the plate tectonics of life. Members and collaborators, live or on record, have included Shaina Kapeluck (violin), Jade Stephens (guitar, kazoo, toys), Candace Anthony (clarinet), Zoe Ladner (jaw harp, mandolin, kazoos, glockenspiel), David Tolar (concertina), David Shackelford (guitar), Becky Zajicek (toys), Matt Piedl (guitar) and Jackie Fitzgerald (tambourine).

The band began out of a long lost project "Paper Hat is Born", intended to be 12 "different" bands all played by Garrett and Nick. Only Mongolia (which preceeded the project) and Carrot Eaters survived the failed experiment, although a couple of the songs went on become Exploding Schoolgirls songs. The two Carrot Eaters tracks later became "Miniature Cyclorama" and "Salivating Lampshade."

The first completed song, however, came later in fall of 2005 - "Embryo of a Tape Loop." The hypnotic loop rolling through the backbone of the song was recorded in the middle of the night in the toy aisle at Wal-mart with friends Becky and Jade. Using a tiny tape recorder, they recorded various musical instruments for toddlers, played back the tape at half speed and built the track around that recording.

The first non-karaoke attempt at a live act was a sparse affair, just Garrett, Nick and Shaina on violin. In spring of 2006, they added Candace, Zoe, Jade and David T., made some demo recordings and "You Who Do Not Dwindle", played a show to nobody and then paraded through the woods, and were actually potentially going somewhere interesting when summer came and Nick decided to leave the country in the fall.

Upon his return in spring 2007, little Carrot Eaters activity occured, although "Postcard Shroud" was recorded and one live show was performed. After Garrett left Warren Wilson for Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA and Nick graduated and moved back to his hometown of Dallas, TX, the project again returned to a recording-only collaboration. In December 2007, they wrapped up the basic recordings for their as-yet-untitled debut album, set for release later in 2008.
