related projects

Archived / assorted musical projects - old bands, scrapped alter egos, one-offs, bad concepts, et cetera.

BURNING HOTNESS - A solo project of Clare Hubbard, also of Sports and Caethua. Nick Wilson played bass in the live band along with Pat Seick (drums) in 2004.

DECAPITATED STORK - An improvised, one-off project in which random pop songs were improvised on the spot by Matt Piedl, Wilson, and Garrett Johnson in spring 2007. Obvious the band hated mammals that look like fish, as noted by their two tracks "I Ate Shamu" and "Tuna Fish Can (With Extra Dolphin)." Their full album was recorded in about 40 minutes, until the guy downstairs came up to tell them to shut the hell up. And that was the end.

THE LEMON BRIGADE - Wilson's first solo project, begun in 2000 when he was a sophomore in high school. Wilson recorded numerous albums on four track over a several year period, 97% of which is of dubious quality and hopefully will never be released. Fuzzy and primitive, with artificial drums. There were pop-punk and emo phases which should ever be heard by anyone. In fall 2003, his freshman year in college, he recorded the first decent material under the moniker on a very lo-fi ep entitled The Future of the Future of Jazz and then stopped the project altogether for greener pastures. "We Wore Sunglasses" turned up occasionally in the live set of Warm Erasers.

PAPER HAT IS BORN - The roots of Paper Hat Records, Carrot Eaters, Exploding Schoolgirls and Mongolia lie in this mostly scrapped recording from Spring 2005. Following his exit from Sports and the failure of the follow-up to War of Nerves's debut, Wilson began to record a cd compiling a bunch of different alter-egos, as well as Garrett Johnson's project Green Uvula and two collaborations between the Sons of John and Wil, Carrot Eaters and Ce Le Bes. Mongolia, the Lemon Brigade and Scalping Party were all present, as were the doomed projects Sgt. Porkbrain, Mighty Willows, Escaping Gas, Click Clack, Recovered Umbrellas, and Clouds of Eternal Sorrow. The CD was intended to be the first release of Paper Hat Records, but was scrapped due mainly to lack of lyrical inspiration and the complexity of drawing clear lines between each alter-ego. However, the music recorded has lived on: both Escaping Gas songs became Exploding Schoolgirl songs ("Burial at Sea" and "Non-Reflecting Mirror") as did one of the Ce Le Bes songs ("Her Love"). All three Carrot Eaters songs ("Salivating Lampshade" "Miniature Cyclorama" and "Carrot Eaters Enjoy Wild Sex") survived and will be on their upcoming cd. One of the Scalping Party songs later became Mongolia's "Hey Sunflower." Most of the rest of songs remain uncompleted, but that does not necessarily mean they will stay that way forever.

PLASTIC EXPLOSIVE ONONO BAND - A one-off by Wilson and his then-15-year-old brother Greg (drums, backing vocals). They recorded a wretched and catchy four song e.p. in the summer of 2006 that was an homage to both Yoko Ono ("a real fun gal") and the joys of fast food. They also played a live set in Spring 2007.

PUMA CUM - An imaginary band with a forklift as a lead singer.

SCALPING PARTY - Wilson's solo project in the latter part of high school (2002-2003), demonstrating more maturity of songwriting and production. The music was diverse, ranging from haunting slowcore to jagged math-punk. All songs were recorded on four-track. One album was recorded from 2002-2003, entitled Cacophony and Cadence. The songs "Repair Me" and "Striptease" are part of the Mongolia live repertoire.

SPORTS - Formed in 2004 by Oren Bruton (vocals), Clare Hubbard (keyboards) and Wilson (simultaneous drums and bass). Initially the project began as a testosterone-laced electro-punk concept about athletics. Wilson left in early 2005, replaced by Zev Deans. Bruton moved to China to teach English later in 2005, and the project changed as Clare became the conceptual and musical epicenter, accellerating the audience-baiting live stage performance and exploring more experimental and industrial territories. Clare and her Sports currently reside in Bloomington, IL. Visit http://www.saxwand.com for more information.

VAMPIRES IN SPACE - A short-lived weirdo post-punk band formed in Spring 2003 by Wilson with Rachel Rogerson (theremin), Ben Vaughn (keyboards) and Chris Luz (drums). Two fun songs and memories of a technically disastrous show remain.

LISTEN: I Just Want to Bite Your Neck

WAR OF NERVES - The original Mongolia, active between 2003-2004, since renamed. Very dark and experimental rock music, highly inspired by This Heat and Joy Division. An album, Disequilibrium, was recorded in 2004. The album was the result of an independent study Wilson did at his college about avant-garde and experimental music. The followup, Heaven is Electric, was half-recorded in late 2004, and then scrapped and the whole project was abandoned.

THE WILES - Founded by Tim DeBenedetti (guitar, vocals) and Gil Kenner (drums) at some point in history, after which, Wilson joined as bass player and was thoroughly molested from 2003-2004. At some point during Nick's tenure, Gil left to become a Catholic priest and was replaced by Pat Seick. Later on, Gil returned, and stuff happened and they later moved to DC and re-tooled or something. Really primal and misanthropic indie rock - parental advisory please.
